What is Involved in a Dyslexia Test?
There is no one test for Dyslexia (also often referred to as Developmental Reading Disorder). This is because in many respects Dyslexia is not “one condition”. We refer you to our page on “What is Dyslexia? (CLICK HERE) for more discussion of this.
Typically an assessment or dyslexia involves administering several psychometric tests designed to examine different skills and abilities relevant to the diagnosis of Dyslexia. Because other learning difficulties or psychological issues are sometimes present in people suffering from dyslexia, or suspected to be suffering from dyslexia, psychologists administering dyslexia tests will sometimes also administer other questionnaires or tests to screen for some of these other learning difficulties or psychological conditions.
The type of dyslexia tests typically administered include tests of general ability (sometimes referred to as IQ tests in the past – although there are several reasons why this is not a great description of what the tests measure), and tests of aptitude or achievement such as reading skills tests, arithmetic ability and spelling ability. The psychologist (and typically it is a psychologist who administers a
dyslexia test) is likely to be interested in a range of reading skills: such as speed, accuracy, comprehension, as well as different aspects of approaches to writing and spelling.
A test of intellectual ability is administered alongside academic skills tests in the assessment of dyslexia as one of the key diagnostic factors is a discrepancy between general ability and written language ability. General ability tests also sometimes provide information about the nature of a child's cognitive ability profile which may explain any reading, spelling, or learning problems which emerge.
